Dark Feminine Energy: Is it Safe or is it Toxic?

Exploring and understanding the truth of the dark feminine and her relationship with the divine feminine will help each of us trust ourselves and one another more deeply. Some wonder if the dark feminine is safe or if she is evil? Some may find the idea of her darkness intriguing and even chase it for its perceived edginess. Yet most misunderstand who and what she truly is. 

Too often men and women alike confuse the dark feminine with shadow or toxic femininity and that confusion can cost us not only peace and trust, but also brilliance and ecstasy. With that in mind, here we’ll look closer at what dark feminine energy means. Next, we’ll consider her conscious and unconscious expressions and how those relate to our personal egoic shadow sides. Then finally in our exploration we’ll see that the dark feminine and the divine feminine have a deep relationship. Might they even be one in the same?

What does dark feminine energy mean?

To know the dark feminine fully we must look from two perspectives. Some believe the dark feminine to be the unconscious, shadow, toxic and therefore cruel and harmful aspects of the feminine. Others know the dark feminine to be the deepest, most powerful, most creative, and most healing aspects of divine feminine energy. 

To begin distinguishing these differing views we must first understand basic feminine energy and its complement masculine energy. In other words we can’t understand yin without yang. Yin or feminine energy creates. She gives birth. She opens, surrenders, and embodies the pleasures of the world. Meanwhile masculine, or yang, energy drives toward a result and leads with assertiveness and sometimes control. The feminine is guided by her senses, all 6 of them, while the masculine finds itself guided by knowing and data. The feminine feels and flows while the masculine sorts, categorizes, and decides. The feminine abandons control while the masculine seeks it.

At the deepest level, neither masculine nor feminine qualities express in inherently good or bad ways. The embodiment of any particular feminine or masculine quality can be held consciously or unconsciously, for the highest good or for self-serving interests. To see the energetic impact or “consciousness” of a particular quality or behavior we must consider the motivation behind it. 

With that contrast, what is dark feminine energy? To be specific, dark feminine energy is not the toxic, unconscious, and shadow expressions of the feminine. Shadow feminine behavior stems from fear and hence arises motivated by personal gain or perceived personal safety. 

In contrast, true dark feminine energy manifests all creation, all beauty, all pleasure, all wonder, all ecstasy, all evolution and growth. The dark feminine liberates us into the most mysterious and wondrous aspects of human love, joy, and intimacy.

Confusing the dark feminine with the shadow or toxic feminine 

Before we dive into the profound and powerful qualities of the dark feminine, let’s take a look at some feminine expressions that, because of their shadow or unconscious motivations, often get mistaken for the dark feminine. 

As we mentioned, these unconscious and often harmful expressions of the feminine often manifest behaviorally when the feminine feminine feels scared or when she doesn’t trust herself or the world. These shadow feminine behaviors can arise when she wants to control life and protect herself. They can also appear, on the other extreme, when she has gone too far into the feminine and lost the roots, boundaries, and groundedness of her inner masculine. 

Said another way, these feminine expressions happen when a woman, or feminine being, starts to move too close to, or too far from, the complementary masculine energy within her. Her ego, her fear disturbs the necessary harmony between her inner masculine and feminine, making her unkind and even harmful to herself, the masculine, and others. 

1. Entitlement – Expecting that you should get (aka receive) something because of a certain specialness or uniqueness without consideration of others.
2. Backbiting – Talking behind someone’s back in an unkind way, usually in an unconscious attempt to make oneself look better.
3. Manipulative – Attempting to influence someone’s behavior, thinking or experience for the good of the self over the good of all.
4. Seductress –  Similar to manipulative, being the “feminine player” who attempts to control or manipulate through sexual energies. 
5. Reckless or out-of-control – Showing up in an ungrounded way without any access to her inner masculine roots can, with her unrestrained emotions, words and actions, cause harm to the hearts and psyches of those she most deeply loves. 
6. Unbounded – Similarly, when the feminine loses access to her inner masculine she realizes an inability to hold boundaries. In that, not only does she abandon herself and hence feel resentment, she will also relate in emotionally unconscious ways, dumping her emotions all over people who, again, she loves. 
7. Cold and unemotional – When the feminine moves too far in the direction of her masculine she loses her beautiful and brilliant capacity to feel. In pushing away and abandoning her own feelings and sensations she no longer leaves room for emotions in herself or others. Love, kindness, and compassion become elusive for herself and those around her. 
8. Emasculating – In one of her most unconscious shadow expressions, the feminine person who does not understand what emasculated means attempts to gain her own security and control by disempowering the masculine. She unwittingly harms the men in her life in ways she can’t even fathom. 

Again, the qualities listed above represent the shadow feminine and should not be confused with the dark feminine. We mention them here so that you can see and feel the contrast with the truly magical dark feminine we’re about to explore.

True divine dark feminine energy traits 

The dark feminine by definition represents the essence of the feminine that can never be seen. It’s the aspect of the feminine that defies being defined and therefore can never be fully understood. Nor can her infiniteness ever be fully contained. The dark feminine encompasses the vastness of the feminine’s power to create, manifest, destroy, and recreate. The dark feminine feels beyond the confines of the body and knows that which can’t readily be seen.  

The dark feminine will always remain at least a partial mystery; and this is where we’ll begin our exploration of the most powerful dark feminine energy traits. 

1. Mystery – By definition, as we said, the dark feminine can never be completely known. Her power lies in the unseen forces beyond our human senses. Most masculine beings will tell you they’re compelled and magnetized by this indescribable and not clearly defineable quality of the feminine. The honest ones will also tell you how much it scares them. Yet, truth be told, it’s a rare feminine being right now who isn’t at least a little intimidated by her own divine darkness. 
2. Enchantress – The radiant indescribable inner beauty of the feminine that has a mesmerizing quality. As one of the feminine archetypes, the enchantress draws others, including the masculine too her, merely by the invisible light she emanates. 
3. Surprise – The feminine has the capacity to receive and channel inspiration and insight from well beyond herself. Some refer to that place as source or the divine. No matter what we call it, there’s often a joy and an excitement sparked when the feminine lets herself be moved from beyond and shares those surprises with others. 
4. Spontaneous – Similarly, the liberated dark feminine has an ability to let go and allow herself to be moved – by Life, by Spirit, by her Soul. This allowing unexpectedly takes her and those around her out of the monotony and over habituated routine of modern life. Thank goodness!
5. Creative – The feminine’s creative process, as we’ve described above, arises from somewhere beyond herself. The most profound artists often say, “I didn’t create it. It came through me.” We cannot produce art nor beauty. We have to allow it to come through us and that is the way of the feminine, regardless of who we are. 
6. Wild – When we let go and enjoy life, when we let ourselves be untethered, unrestrained, and free, when we let our souls have their way with us, an exquisite beautiful, ecstasy, moves through and around us. When the feminine embraces her wildness she and those around her feel their true aliveness. 
7. Intuitive 6th sense – As we mentioned above the dark feminine knows without seeing. She knows without rationally or logically knowing. When we surrender to our intuition and have the courage to follow it, we can be shocked by the blessings and protections that come our way through our feminine essence.  
8. Magnetism – When the feminine shines her radiant light she generates a seemingly inexplicable field of magnetic energy that draws others to her. Others feel compelled and inspired by her light like moths to a flame. Of course this feminine magnetism can feel irresistible to the masculine. 
9. Surrender – Surrender by definition means we’re letting go of control, we’re allowing ourselves to be with “what is” and “what is to come” without actually knowing what will happen. In our surrender we are willing not to know. Our most profound sexual pleasures come from our ability to surrender to the energy at hand and let it take us to never-been-before places together. Have you even known a best ever was going to happen before it happened? We bet not. 
10. Destruction for reconstruction – Yes, the feminine also has a destructive energy. Often accompanied by her wildness, that pure divine feminine consciousness clears the way for new growth by removing the old. Of course we know the necessity of mother earth’s fires that make way for new growth in the forests. The Hindu goddess Kali is specifically known for this energy. In our conscious dark feminine expression, destruction may well happen, but destruction in and of itself is not the goal. The goal is rebirth.
11. Healing and miracles – Unexpected healing and divine miracles come through the dark feminine. We know miracles happen and we also know that we can never make a miracle happen. We have to open the space for it, be available for it, and have faith that it will arrive if it’s meant to. The invisibility of faith combined with the feminine’s capacity to manifest miracles, well, that is the miraculousness of life at it’s best.

Notice that you cannot point directly at any one of these dark feminine experiences. You can’t quantify them. You can’t put them in a box. There is no formula for any of these powerful expressions of femininity. Yet, even though we can’t capture them or see them with the human eye, most know they would never want a life without these incredible beautiful blessings.

As you consider these qualities of the dark feminine, you may see many of them have close connections to experiences that we’ve associated with God, the Divine, Life, the Universe, or whatever you might call it. It is specifically and exactly the feminine’s capacity to surrender and receive, which exists within every human being, that allows us to feel and experience the presence of the Divine in our lives. 

The dark feminine invites us into feelings of wonder and awe as we come into close contact with the miracle of life itself. Whether we feel the miracle of life to be human birth, the immense intricacies of our ecosystems, or the unexplainable wonders of the galaxies of the Universe, these stunning dimensions can never be fully comprehended. They can never be accurately described in words; and that, dear one, is the dark feminine.

The role of the divine masculine

What the true deepest feminine always craves is to live by letting go into the indescribable ecstasy of life’s powerful mystery. Many feminine beings, when they know themselves deeply, realize they long to let themselves be taken, to be ravished by the raw beauty, majesty, and power of Life. The feminine finds that ecstasy through her ability to let go and trust. 

That means that we must once again acknowledge that the fullest expression of the feminine, dark and light, always happens with the support of the masculine. However, please don’t always assume that presence to always be a man or masculine being. The feminine is supported by the masculine within herself, through others, and, most importantly, through The Divine Masculine. The divine embodied feminine feels that she is held by The Divine Masculine – God, Spirit, Life, Universe – expressed through the collective human embodied divine masculine – in all of its forms and expressions.  

So yes, masculine beings, you contribute directly to the manifestation and embodiment of the Divine Deminine in the world.
