Divine Consciousness: How to Access this Powerful Force for Good
Divine Consciousness reaches out to us daily, offering itself for our well-being, peace, and joy. It lives so close to us and wants so much for us. Yet sometimes we can neither see it nor feel it. While it has accompanied us since birth on this human journey, we may lose sight of it, obscured by our own insecurities, fears, and difficulties.
To know Divine Consciousness, to receive its infinite blessings, and allow its brilliance to guide us, we must cultivate a level of trust rare to most human beings. The vast majority of us spend our lives caught in the cycles of protection, proving, and striving – seeking a kind of security we can never find in our external experiences. No matter how much, or how fiercely, we fight for the control and life circumstances we believe will finally make us feel safe, secure, and loved, what we strive for in that way eludes us.
The material, and even egoic pursuits, we believe will allow us to finally relax, rest, and feel peace never provide the internal feeling for which we long. Pursuing the ideal and perfect connections and circumstances will always fail us. On the other hand, our deep cultivated relationship to Divine Consciousness will bring us everything we seek and so much more than our limited human consciousness could ever conceive of.
What is Divine Consciousness?
We know we have connected to and aligned with Divine Consciousness when we find ourselves in a flow state. When life seems to unfold effortlessly, in line with our intentions, we are moving with, or more accurately, are moved by, Divine consciousness. When we, intentionally or unintentionally, have opened with Divine Consciousness we experience synchronicities and what we believe to be miracles. Perfect timing becomes the norm.
Divine Consciousness is our connection to, or more specifically, a form of communication with, what we might call God or Spirit, the Divine, Higher Self, or a myriad of other powerful names. In the Christian tradition we might liken it to the Holy Spirit, although Divine Consciousness transcends all religions. Said another way, it infuses and flows from all sacred traditions.
As we give the term Divine Consciousness meaning, we see that it is both an experience and a result. Artists and many athletes know its meaning well because their art and their performance, when at its best, reflects their deep union and alignment with this sacred force. They know that their art, their performance, flowed through them – and the outcome was better than they could have themselves imagined.
Most masterful artists, performers, athletes, even inventors, writers and surgeons know that they personally did not come up with the idea, hold the brush, write the words, move the scalpel, or find the speed they experienced. They describe their creation or performance as coming through them from something, somewhere beyond themselves. This is Divine Consciousness in action.
If we would all lean on Divine Consciousness just a little bit more every one of us would have indescribably exquisite lives. The feeling of awe would visit us frequently.
The qualities of Divine Consciousness
To round out our definition of Divine Consciousness we need to contrast it to what we’ll call our human consciousness, or in other words, the egoic human personality or conditioning. Until we have a Divine awakening experience most of us believe that our thoughts and feelings represent the truth of life. Yet, as we’ll see here, the real picture is much bigger than our typical viewpoint. A much bigger presence surrounds us. Something greater holds us. This powerful loving force, this Divine Consciousness, cares for us in profound ways.
With that in mind, let’s contrast the qualities of Divine Consciousness with the related qualities of Human Consciousness…
| Divine Consciousness | Human Consciousness |
| Infinite | Finite |
| Unlimited / Unbounded | Limited |
| Anything is possible | Impossibility |
| Expansive | Contractive |
| Unknown | Known |
| Peace | Chaos |
| Clarity | Confusion |
| Miracles | Effort |
| Blessed | Forgotten |
| Abundance | Lack |
| Powerful beyond measure (happened for me) | Victim (happened to me) |
| Unity | Separation |
| Connected | Alone |
| Joy | Suffering |
| Trust | Fear |
| Wholeness | Brokenness |
| Perfection | Flawed |
| Love | Resistance |
As you explore the qualities of Divine Consciousness you may notice here what may seem to be one list of things you seek and another list of experiences and conditions you work to overcome, or feel you have to deal with. We might call it the human condition, a limited perspective and perception of the true reality we live within.
A part of us knows, if even deeply unconsciously, that Divine Consciousness forms a part of us, and as a result we continually seek it. We know on some level that we are meant to experience these qualities consistently throughout our lifetime.
Peace, joy, love, passion and beauty are meant for us, yet so often we can’t find them because we forget that our experience of our human consciousness, or ego, and the challenging life circumstances we sometimes face, are our teachers and guides. These very real human experiences invite us into divine mastery.
Being a master of Divine Consciousness
If one desires to become a master of Divine Consciousness, surprisingly they must begin by mastering the human journey. To do otherwise, we would refer to as spiritual bypass. The challenges of life that we inevitably face on our human journey show us the pathway to True Love, to the Divine and its infinite blessings. If we do not fight, resist, and try to control away our human experience we will discover that the embracing of our humanity leads to our divinity.
The embracing of our humanity leads to our divinity.

Said another very practical way, the contraction leads to the expansion. Remember that in real life it is the contractions, the very painful contractions of the mother, that give birth to the miracle of a child. Every true divine expansion comes through a set of contractions. Any mother who has given birth knows that if you fight the contraction the pain only amplifies. Many also know that most often our great challenges and pain have given birth to our greatest blessings.
Unfortunately, most of us have been conditioned to fight against the unfolding of life that doesn’t look the way we want it to. We believe that our human mind, our individuated human consciousness, knows what life “should” look like. When it doesn’t match our mind’s (our human consciousness) we often run from, brace against, or vigorously try to change life’s circumstances to match our limited viewpoint. At best, we find only temporary relief. Again remember, our mind and our control always fail to provide the love, peace, and security we seek outside ourselves.
What if life had a wisdom to it and we alone can’t see the whole picture?
Maybe you’ve heard the phrase often attributed to Carl Jung, “what you resist persists” and the corollary written by Neale Donald Walsch, that “what you look at disappears”. We might call these two sentences together the path of love or the path of Divine Consciousness. Masters of Divine Consciousness realize and embrace the truth of the simultaneous existence of human and Divine. They learn to live in a way that allows a harmonious existence of both — within oneself and between us in our human relationship dynamics.
Consciously and bravely walking the human life journey with love not resistance brings us face to face with the Divine.
Uniting human and Divine
As we said, Divine Consciousness coexists with our human condition. Our souls know these two aspects of the Universe are meant to live in union – and that in that union we will experience the untold blessings meant for our soul. As a matter of fact, it is our soul that exists at the intersection of our human and Divine Consciousness. Our soul knows the lessons we are meant to learn, the contributions we have for humanity, and the unique ecstasy of bliss we are destined to experience.
To unite human and divine we must begin to live in harmony with what we would rather reject. We must embrace the parts of ourselves and others that we would rather deny or change. We must accept that which we cannot change. We must release that which was never ours to possess.
When human and Divine unite, we learn that our greatest challenges offer us our greatest gifts. We realize that life, and Divine Consciousness, are always for our hearts, for our souls, for our prosperity, for our wellbeing, for peace on earth.
To support this all important reunion, the soul connections that come into our lives offer a catalyst and an alchemy for our soul’s evolution. As our soul evolves we become a day-to-day experience and expression of Divine Consciousness and that embodiment within any one individual assists untold others toward their own divine embodiment.
Each person who has opened themselves to allow the Divine to flow through them offers innumerable priceless gifts to those around them, to humanity itself. You may consciously realize some of the gifts your presence offers to others. And many of the gifts you have given will remain forever beyond your awareness. The power of your contribution, however, remains the same.
When human and divine meet life can be nothing other than ecstatic.
Divine Consciousness lies as something intangible and beyond the understanding of our human mind. Yet we cannot allow its seeming invisibility, its lack of tangible presence, to dissuade us from our instinctive pursuit to unite with it. True Love lives and lies where human and divine meet.
Loving soul-to-soul – even, and most especially, when the one we love pushes our buttons, makes us uncomfortable, or puts our human conditioned consciousness smack dab in front of our face, in an undeniable way – is the fastest route to Divine Consciousness and Divine Union.
Regrettably, most will never walk this path. Most will never realize it exists. Yet those, whose own alignment with Divine Consciousness put them on this path have abundant miracles waiting for them – should they have the courage to receive. Those who courageously, if not confidently, chose to surrender to the magic and miracles of the journey despite the inevitable pains they will go through, will never regret the journey.
