How Do Men Fall in Love: 5 Ways to Ignite His Heart

The longings of the feminine heart wonder, how do men fall in love? Ah, what a desire we have to know the mysteries of love and why it blossoms in some connections and not in others. If only we could follow a formula, if only we had a step-by-step map to each other’s hearts. Yet, if it was that easy, would love hold the same magical elixir qualities?

While men and women, the masculine and feminine, share some common pathways to love, the roadmaps to each other’s hearts have unique twists and turns. When we explore the differences, we will find that we ignite each other’s hearts in very different ways.

Here we’ll start by answering the question how do men fall in love as we then explore the most powerful ways to ignite love in the male heart. We’ll continue by answering the question, how fast do men fall in love, because the timing of love’s appearance – sometimes too fast, sometimes too slow – confuses many women. Finally, we’ll close with an exploration of the barriers that often stand in the way of how a man falls in love.

How do men fall in love?

For most men, the masculine feminine dynamic lies at the heart of how they fall in love. Love tends to awaken for men in the presence of a woman they somehow find mesmerizing. Many men feel as if their heart has been captured, not as in taken hostage, but as in being drawn out and awakened deeply by the one before him.

What we see in the masculine feminine dynamic is that most of us, when it comes to romantic connection, find ourselves most attracted to our compliment, to our opposite. We have seen time and time again for decades, in our retreats and programs, that most men, as well as most women, find themselves drawn to a partner who embodies the opposite blend of masculine and feminine energy, when compared to their own blend. In other words, if a man has strong masculine energy that he consistently embodies, he will seek and fall in love with a partner who consistently embodies more feminine energy.

Therefore as we look at the qualities that ignite a man’s heart and have him fall in love we will see that they clearly represent the embodiment of the feminine. We must then, of course, mention that if a man is running more feminine energy in his life, or tends to show up as the nice guy, the ways he falls in love may differ. Someone with Nice Guy Syndrome may actually find more masculine women attractive.

The top 5 ways to ignite love in his heart

Here we describe the most common aspects of a woman and her embodiment that have a man fall in love. Before we begin, we must say that while we can offer indicators here of the path to a man’s heart, we also have to remember the uniqueness of each individual being as well as the impact that our wounding and conditioning has on how we approach love. We’ll say more about that shortly when we explore the barriers to how men fall in love, but for now let’s go back to what ignites his heart.

  1. Joy: Since the masculine embodies more of the serious and focused energy in comparison to the feminine, he will find himself falling in love most easily with someone who has access to her joy and playfulness. We have often said in our work that in order for a man to fall in love, and stay in love with a woman, she must be “make happyable.” That means that she takes care of herself and opens herself in a way that allows a man to contribute to her happiness. The feminine’s joy fuels the masculine.
  1. Radiance: Feminine energy holds the light of the world. When she feels fully alive and free in her being she will have a natural glow about her. Men in the masculine tend to find this irresistible, and it definitely leads him toward love.
  1. Receptivity: The masculine by nature has a strong desire and propensity to contribute. He wants to be able to make a difference in the life of the woman he loves. So while a man certainly isn’t looking for someone “needy,” or someone who needs to be rescued, he definitely falls in love with a feminine being who generously receives his contributions, revels in the blessings that generosity creates for her – and appreciates him for it.
  1. Attraction: Of course we cannot ignore the fact that men and masculine beings, when it comes to romantic connections, have a strong visual component to what makes them fall in love. They must find their potential partner physically attractive. Yet, while body type definitely plays a role for most men, the resultant attraction is a combination of the physical characteristics and the inner beauty or light. In other words, physical attraction and radiance go together when men fall in love.
  1. Strength in vulnerability: When men fall in love and choose partners, they also find themselves drawn to vulnerability. Again, this isn’t about a woman not being able to handle life and therefore needing a man, but about her choosing to allow him to see her in her beauty as well as in her mess. In other words, she allows him to see her imperfection. She allows him to see her raw emotions. Yet she doesn’t dump her feelings on him, expecting him to fix them for her. She does however allow him to hold her in the fullness of her expression – emotions, needs, and otherwise.

Continuing with our exploration of how men fall in love, we must consider two other factors. While not on the top five list of things that bring a man’s heart to love, in choosing a partner men will almost always want a woman to have access to, or at least a desire for, the expression of her sensuality and sexuality. Then, last but not least, a man also falls in love when a woman creates a space for him to soften and express himself. A woman, or a feminine being, has an immense power to create a safe space for a man to feel things he has never felt before. This is one of her gifts and that gift can certainly lead a man to fall in love.

“The feminine fuels the masculine with her joy.”

How fast do men fall in?

If you’re asking how soon do men fall in love, we have to say right upfront, there is no hard and fast rule. Different studies will give you different estimations. We would like to offer that the speed at which men fall in love varies greatly depending on the man, the stage of life he is in, how much wounding he has, and how much healing he has done to keep his heart open. As you see, many variables factor into the availability of a man’s heart, making it hard to predict how fast he will fall in love.

How soon he falls in love also depends directly on how emotionally available he is, as well as on what type of attachment style he embodies. For example, some masculine beings, when they have an avoidant attachment style, are much slower to allow themselves to fall in love. On the other hand, those men within an anxious attachment style may feel as if they fall in love much more quickly. Yet, in this case, they may attach more quickly but don’t necessarily truly love more quickly. Those with an anxious attachment style can often settle for “good enough” in a romantic connection yet believe it is love.

At the same time, some men do fall genuinely in love very fast. Sometimes a man just “knows” he has found his one. In this case, if the woman is ready herself, their relationship can progress quite quickly. Unfortunately, we must also note that frequently his fast experiences of love – either healthily because his heart is truly open and he just knows, or because his anxious attachment style, or even Nice Guy Syndrome, drives him to settle and think he’s in love – can scare a woman. The men who fall in love quickly can sometimes cause a woman to question his heart because she doesn’t feel “known” enough yet to believe he has fallen in love with her versus some idea of her.

With all of this in mind, we recommend that rather than trying to figure out if the timing is “right”, simply trust how you feel in your body and move from that inner wisdom.

The barriers to a man falling in love

As we continue deepening our understanding of men and love, we find it worth including a look at the barriers that can prevent men from falling in love. Some of these barriers will arise internally within a man while others will arise within the person his heart contemplates. Let’s start by listing some of the barriers that start on the inside.

  • Avoidant attachment style: A man with an avoidant attachment style will often feel as if he’s sending mixed messages. He may experience an inner battle where a part of him truly wants to connect deeply and fall in love while another part of him feels, usually unconsciously, terrified by the perceived risk of falling in love. This push-pull dynamic often makes it harder for a woman to remain open and radiant with him while also making it hard for him to trust and lean into the budding connection.
  • Nice guy syndrome: Besides often being associated with an anxious attachment style, when a man embodies nice guy syndrome he may actually lead with more passive feminine energy that covers up his, usually, more innate masculine energy. This means he may attract a woman who similarly has a masculine external expression covering up her innate femininity. When this happens the two may find some level of attraction, yet the reverse polarity dynamic will again commonly result in mixed messages, all of which can limit how men fall in love.
  • Seeking freedom: Part of the expression of masculinity includes a need and a drive for freedom and sovereignty over connection. This can happen, particularly in the early stages of a man’s life and when the need for freedom runs high. This will obviously make it hard for him to truly fall in love.
  • Career focus: Similar to a man’s need for freedom, often younger men feel an incessant drive to establish their career and financial stability before they commit to a relationship or allow themselves to fall in love. A man may want a relationship, yet a greater part of him may need to establish himself professionally first. When a woman recognizes this natural aspect of masculinity and doesn’t try to fight it, when he does eventually fall in love, he will love and care for the woman he chooses very well.

If we look at how women might make it difficult for men to fall in love with them, we most commonly see that a woman’s struggle to allow her femininity to express itself plays a big part. The strong independent woman persona can block her ability to receive, enjoy, and be vulnerable – all of which, as we know, play a role in igniting a man’s heart. Additionally, just as with a man, a woman’s attachment styles and her own wounding may also prevent her from showing up in a way that inspires deep love in a potential partner.

Finally, we must also mention that sometimes two people’s souls and personalities simply do not align. No matter how many boxes seemed to be checked or how good the fit looks on paper, it still may not be right. Obviously, this will make it nearly impossible for a man to fall in love.

In closing, as we have answered the question, how do men fall in love, we see ever more clearly that a significant number of factors play into the falling in love process. With that in mind, you are once again encouraged to resist seeking a formulaic answer to this question. As with every aspect of dating and relationships, most importantly you want to stay present with yourself and to what unfolds authentically between you moment-by-moment.

Finally, we must also reassure you. Contrary to popular belief, a woman does not need to have it all together for a man to fall in love with her. He wants her richness, her fullest expression – in all ways. And, when she’s uncomfortable with that full expression of herself – which many women are – the divine masculine man will desire her willingness to allow him to create a safe space for her opening, unfolding, and blossoming.

When a man falls deeply in love he seeks to be met in the completeness of life. A man ready for love will have the capacity to walk through the hardest of times with the woman he chooses. She must also choose him and desire to share that fullness of life and love with him, vulnerabilities and all.
