Reciprocal Breathing
Let’s explore another fundamental breathing technique – Reciprocal Breathing – practiced in Tantra…
Reciprocal breathing means that two partners breath opposite of each other. Specifically, when one person inhales, the other will exhale. Then of course it repeats. So that you are continually breathing opposite of one another. Again, just like coupled breathing… you can practice this without your partner even knowing you’re doing it!
Again, let one person breath normally… this person would be “leading” the practice. The other partner, the “follower”, will then breathe opposite the leader’s breathing pattern…inhaling when the “leader” exhales and inhaling when the “leader” exhales.
Again if your partner breathes much faster than you do, you might take one breath for every two of your partner’s breaths.
What are the Benefits of Reciprocal Breathing?
So why would you want to do this? Reciprocal breathing allows you to circulate and raise your energies. This can be incredibly powerful whether lovemaking or simply lying together. You may both feel as if you are becoming more energized. You may feel it as life-force energy or you may feel it as sexual energy. Whatever you feel is perfect!
You can practice reciprocal breathing anytime. Practice it during a hug. Practice it as you are falling asleep or waking up. Practice it during love making. Practice it while cuddling on the sofa… practice it anytime!
